“There is no need to differentiate alternative comics from commercial comics, for the so-called ‘alternative’ is just another side of the commercial. Comics is at the same time a form of art.”

 

Li began his career in the comics industry in 1982. After working for a corporate comics publisher in Hong Kong for a month, he decided to start his own venture as a freelancer. Following on from the release of The Wisely series, he self-published Tong Men Shao Nian, a prominent title which rocketed him to fame in 1987. He has since developed a distinctive art style, creating his own visual world with eerily experimental works that broke genre rules.

Black Mask, Assassins, Tien Yao Ji, Superbaby, Little Strawberry, and K are major works that he created in the early stage of his career. career. He has been continually created for many years. Selected publications from this decade include The Voyager, The Lover, and Folio, Little Circle, Vicious, and Solar Eclipse.

Li’s transmedia creations transcend the boundary of comics and expand into movies, experimental theatres, literature, pop music and sculptures. Recently, the poster that he created for Hong Kong local sci-fi action movie Warriors of Future has been widely praised. His idiosyncratic style has attracted the attention and commissions from local and international brands such as Nike, New Balance, IdN, Uniqlo, Starbucks, Hong Kong International Airport, TamJai SamGor Mixian, Moleskine, etc.

Li is also well-known to the international comics scene. His comics has been published in places like Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, Mainland China, France ,and Italy since the 1990s.

In 2016, the Hong Kong Arts Centre had jointly curated Li’s solo exhibition with the Angoulême International Comics Festival in France as one of the Festival’s thematic exhibitions. His French comics The Beast, a collaborative project with the famous Belgian writer Jean Dufaux, was released at the same time. This solo exhibition had given birth to another international cooperation opportunity. Li was invited by the Louvre Museum to create comics Moon of the Moon. In 2019, the French version was released in Europe. Chinese version and Malaysian version were released subsequently. The drawings of the book were once exhibited in The Belgian Comic Strip Center.

His recent publications include romance comics Yum Sui, comics that pay homage to Franz Kafka's literary classics Kafka, children comics A Little Strawberry Vol. 1 (2022 Reprint Edition), etc.

In 2022, Hong Kong Arts Centre awarded Honorary Fellowships to Chi-tak Li, recognising Li’s invaluable contribution to the arts sector in Hong Kong and Asian region.

「商業與另類漫畫無需分野，所謂的「另類」只是商業的另一面；漫畫同時也能踏進藝術領域。」

1982年投身漫畫創作，在港式漫畫集團工作一個月後即以自由身闖蕩漫畫界。繪畫過《衛斯理》系列後，87年自資出版代表作《同門少年》而聲名大噪，自此發展其獨特的漫畫風格，以奇詭實驗、突破類型的漫畫築構自己的視覺世界。

 

早期主要漫畫作品有《黑俠》、《刺秦》、《天妖記》、《Superbaby》、《草莓妹》、《K》。多年來無間斷創作，近十年間個人出版包括《大海盜談》、《大愛神話》、《二開》、《大圓天》、《刻毒》、《Solar Eclipse日食》等。

 

漫畫以外，亦參與多個跨媒介的創作，將其繪畫延伸至電影、實驗劇場、文學、流行音樂、雕塑等。最新為本港科幻動作電影《明日戰記》繪畫宣傳海報，廣受好評。此外，其別樹一幟的畫風，吸引多個國際品牌委約創作，包括Nike、New Balance、IdN、Uniqlo、Starbucks、香港國際機場、譚仔三哥米線、Moleskine等。

 

利志達是海外漫畫迷熟知的香港漫畫家，1990年代開始已在海外連載及出版，包括日本的講談社及小學館、臺灣、馬來西亞、中國內地、法國、意大利等。

 

2016年，香港藝術中心聯同法國安古蘭國際漫畫節為其策劃個人展覽，成為該屆漫畫節主題展之一，同步推出與著名比利時作家Jean Dufaux合作的法語漫畫《The Beast》。是次個人展覽更帶來另一次面向國際的合作，利志達獲羅浮宮博物館合作邀請，編繪漫畫《Moon of the Moon 蟾宮事變》，2019年於歐洲發行法文版，其後推出香港中文版及馬來西亞版，該書畫作亦於比利時漫畫藝術中心展出。

 

近年出版的有愛情漫畫《飲水》、以著名文學作家法蘭茲 • 卡夫卡的短篇作品為材的漫畫《卡夫卡》、兒童漫畫《草莓妹》第一冊‧二零二二復刻版等。

2022年香港藝術中心頒授「藝術榮譽獎」，肯定利志達對香港及亞洲藝術界所作的卓越貢獻。

Li Chi-tak entame sa carrière de bédéiste en 1982. Il intègre d’abord une grande maison d’édition de BD à Hong Kong, mais décide de poursuivre une carrière d’artiste indépendant un mois plus tard, devenant notamment un dessinateur pour la très populaire série polar The Wisely. C’est la publication en 1987 de Tong Men Shao Nian (Les co-disciples), un recueil de one-shots, qui l’a rendu célèbre. À partir de cette œuvre, Li cultive un style distinctif, créant un univers visuel inquiétant et expérimental qui transgresse les conventions de genre.

Plusieurs BD marquent le début de sa carrière, telles que Black Mask, Assassins, Tien Yao Ji, Superbaby, Little Strawberry et K. Un artiste prolifique et infatigable, Li Chi-Tak n’a cessé d’inventer. Parmi ses titre plus récents comptent The Voyager, The Lover, Folio, Little Circle, Vicious, Solar Eclipse.

Au-delà de la bande dessinée, Li s’exprime également à travers d’autres formes artistiques. Cinéma, théâtre expérimental, littérature, musique pop, sculpture, pour en citer que quelques unes où il a laissé ses empreintes. L’affiche qu’il a récemment créée pour le film de science-fiction hongkongais Warrior of Future a trouvé un écho très favorable. Son style singulier appelle les propositions de collaboration de la part des marques internationales reconnues : Nike, New Balance, IdN, Uniqlo, Starbucks et Aéroport international de Hong Kong, TamJai SamGor Mixian, Moleskine, etc.

Li Chi-tak compte parmi les bédéistes hongkongais les plus appréciés à l’étranger. Depuis les années 1990, ses œuvres sont traduites et publiées au Japon (chez Kodansha et Shōgakukan), à Taïwan, en Malaisie, en Chine continentale, en France et en Italie.

En 2016, le Centre d’arts de Hong Kong s’associe avec le Festival international de la bande dessinée d’Angoulème pour proposer une rétrospective de Li Chi-tak. À cette occasion sort également son album The Beast, fruit d’une collaboration entre Li et le scénariste belge Jean Dufaux. Son exposition solo à Angoulême donne d’ailleurs lieu à une nouvelle collaboration internationale, cette fois-ci avec le Musée du Louvre. Moon of the Moon, l’œuvre issue de cette collaboration paraît en Europe en novembre 2019, puis à Hong Kong et en Malaisie. Elle a également été exposé au Centre Belge de la Bande Dessinée.

Ses publications récentes incluent Yum Sui (Boire de l’eau), une BD de romance ; Kafka, l’œuvre inspirée des nouvelles du grand écrivain Franz Kafka ; et A Little Strawberry Vol. 1 (réédition 2022), un album pour enfants.
